Hola Barcelona

Portrait of the neighbours of Barcelona during 2014:

There is a global village but also exclusive identity traits. I like traveling to see how people are in other places, how they dress for the weather, how they interpret fashion, how they incorporate their faith and fears, how they combine their different influences, how they mix the ethnic groups, their features, their scars. I like to see an urban identity different from mine and I seek to be inspired, influenced, impregnated by the places I visit. Each city is the footprint of its history, but I am not interested in a city made of stones. I look for the echo of its conquerors, of its emigrants, of the different gods that have been worshipped. The city is a movement, a trend, a common life project, with unspoken rules in its behaviour and in its interpretation of contemporaneity with the luggage from its past.
I want to explore these topics, to reflect this “urban identity” through my portraits, to take pictures of different communities, to know the geography through its inhabitants. With this aim in mind, in February 2014, from my studio La Recámara, we started the campaign Hola, Barcelona! in which I invited my neighbors to stop by the studio and have their portrait taken. All mass media –television, radio, webpages, blogs, etc.- picked the story up and the campaign was very successful. Around 700 people participated in the campaign. Here I publish a selection of a hundred portraits. There was no casting or previous selection whatsoever.

Mille Miglia

I have been travelling across Italy since 2008. I am working on what will be a personal and subjective view of this country. It is an intimate portrait of the country of my grandmother, its daily nature, its magic and its characters. I am not looking for any exceptionality or events. I am in search of an essence, a characteristic that survives throughout the centuries. I just capture the feelings that life conveys when I am among Italian people. I wander around its dilapidated streets. I photograph life underneath its monuments. I am fascinated by the decadence, by the surrealism of its scenes, by the survival of its attitudes and scenery. I register the pleasure I receive from the mixture between exquisiteness and grotesqueness, between Visconti and Fellini. (2008-2014)

Something personal

In January 2004, for personal and professional reasons, I decided to put an end to my work as a photographer of famous people. I sold my photography studio in Madrid and for about 2 years I lived in the woods of Valsain, a  period during which I decided in what new direction I wanted my life and professional career to go in. After almost two decades of portraying fame and vanity, I started my personal introspective project about my family and childhood landscapes in my family house situated in a little town in Segovia, Spain. In 2006, I changed mountains for sea and I moved to Somo, Cantabria, Spain, where I created a photography school called La Recámara. In 2013, I moved to Barcelona.
